How to choose diameter of hula hoop?

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

If you are looking for a quick guide, all you need is in this video.

Quick guide! No time for measuring?

If You want to spin with the hoop only on the waist and shape the body - I recommend 100cm, fitness hoop.

If you want start with waist hooping and afterwards you want more than a spin on the waist - I recommend 90cm, dance hoop.

You already have one hoop, you know the basics and you are looking for something new - I recommend 80cm, polypro 20mm hoop.

You want to start spinning with two hoops - I recommend 75cm, polypro 16mm hoop.

ADULTS

I am a complete beginner:

If you've never held a hoop in your hand, here's a little help on how to choose a hoop. The general tool for selection is: measure from the ground to the navel. The hoop should be Roughly the same size (+ - 5cm)

Fitness hoop: The heaviest hoop of all offered variants. Slower turning and higher weight guarantees comfortable turning on the waist, during which you can make other movements and strengthen the hoop. It is suitable for shaping the figure. The diameter of the tube is 25mm. Sizes 110cm, 105cm and 100cm are suitable for shaping and 95cm in size for smaller ones. Because the hoops are really heavy, they are suitable for spinning on the body, not in the hands.

Dance Hoop: Still belongs to the category of heavier hoops for beginners. This means that the higher weight of the hoop will help you keep the hoop on your waist and learn all the tricks gradually. Excellent for spinning on the body and mastering the basic tricks of hoop dance. The diameter of the tube is 20 mm (so it is a bit lighter than a fitness hoop). I recommend it for those who do not only want to shoot at the waist, but also learn basic tricks and sets, for example in their hands. For beginners, I recommend a hoop with a diameter of 90 cm.

Size 110 - 105cm:

The largest hoops we offer.

it spins slower, so you learn better to spin at the waist (slower rotation gives you more time to pick up pace)

In the fitness variant, these hoops are suitable for turning on the waist, they weigh in the range of 550 - 650 g

Size 100 - 95cm:

big and heavy hoop = the basis of the success of spinning at the waist

it spins slower, so you learn better to spin at the waist (slower rotation gives you more time to pick up pace)

Choose the size according to the height to the navel

Size 90cm:

for those who want to move on to other tricks right after overcoming the first goal - which is spinning on the waist

in my opinion, this is the most suitable size of a dance hoop - universal = both for spinning on the body and in the hands

it is not so heavy, but definitely not easy = in peace you will learn other tricks such as insulation, escalators, waves ... in addition to turning on your waist ...

it is to some extent also suitable for spinning in the hands = I recommend it as a training hoop with which you will slowly learn new tricks

Size 85cm:

as a choice of the first hoop, I recommend only to people of smaller stature (= you measure less than 165cm)

it is also suitable as the first hoop for older children (= range 8-15)

I am intermediate hooper:

Slightly advanced for me is the one who already masters the technique of turning on the waist, tries other tricks with the hoop and has at least one beginner's hoop at home. For the slightly advanced, I recommend another Polypro 20mm hoop as an option.

What is Polypro 20mm?

Polypro is a material for hoops from abroad. You can see this material in all instagram videos. It is used all over the world and has gained popularity with hoopers because it is a bit lighter than a beginner's ring, so it is a bit faster. He also behaves differently. 20mm means tube diameter. Here are its advantages and disadvantages:

+ is firmer - but more fragile

+ holds its shape better - does not like frost

+ can be reduced - it must not be folded in frost, there is a risk of cracking

+ much more pleasant to the hand, polypro is the basis for flow

+ I will not allow this material, nor the rest of the world

Yes, polypro is a bit more fragile (especially in frosts), but if you go to it nicely, it will last forever. No, it doesn't break when it falls to the ground .. or when it falls 300 times to the ground, you step on it, but when the baby comes and tries to "spring" with the hoop, squeeze it ... or, for example, you try the breaks & paddles trick (take a look at youtube ) and lean into it with full force, the hoop may break. It never happened to me personally - and I've had polyp circles for at least 7 years.

What does it mean that the circle can be reduced? Polypro hoops are made on a so-called CLICK joint. This means that the joint is equipped with a button which, when pressed and engaged, the circle opens. Even the unnoticed joints bring the advantage of the possibility of partial twisting on the road. This is how I travel with a hoop on a backpack and by plane.

We must take care of our circles with love. You will know for yourself what is good for circles and what is not :) Now to the point ...

Which hoop size to choose for Polypro 20mm material?

Size 85cm

I recommend this size as a choice of the second circle

you will still be able to attack it on the body (it will require a little faster movement)

very nice size for building flow = not too big not to interfere, but at the same time not so light to keep doing more and faster than you want :)

I also recommend this size as a hoop size if you want to learn how to spin more hoops on the body (= multihooping)

Size 80cm

you are smaller in height (= you measure less than 165cm) and this is your second hoop

great size for flow - very nice size that allows you to play a lot

Size 75cm

I recommend if you like mainly offbody (out of body) tricks

it is not very suitable for a long spin on the body - it already requires a considerable dose of speed and perfect techniques to keep on the waist

if you want to start with two circles, I recommend this size = they are not very big and heavy, so they do not interfere with each other and your hands will not fall after 10 minutes :)

I am advanced:

For me, the one who is already able to play with tricks, maybe even invent his own, manages to combine tricks, cultivates his own style ... and wants more!

What more can I offer? As the icing on the cake for gourmets, I offer Polypro 16mm. My favorite material in size for connoisseurs who are not afraid of speed.

It is the lightest tube on the market. Flow is as soft as butter, smooth and fluffy. If you are spinning with two or more circles in your hands, Polypro 16mm is a must for you. After all, every extra millimeter and gram is really known in the tricks in the hands.

And what about the size of Polypro 16mm?

If you want to try Polypro 16mm for the first time and you don't know what size to choose, I recommend you choose 5cm smaller than you use now :) The circle will be almost the same size, but lighter. Change guaranteed.

size you should know for yourself ... Everyone suits something different. There are no limits (from 60cm - so-called minis, up to 90cm)

CHILDREN

Adult hoops would be too big and heavy for children. Therefore, children have their own rules for choosing a hoop, usually according to age. Start a circle ... or a child with a circle can be a child from about 3 years.

3-5 years

for such a small child, I recommend taking a circle of such a size as the dimension between the ground and the outstretched hand in front of you. At this age, the child will not revolve around the waist, but will want to try everything possible, especially in the hands. So it is important that the circle is not too big for him.

5-7 years

at this age I recommend a size of 70cm - it is a size with which he can try to spin on his stomach and when he grows out of the circle, he can still play with it in his hands

7-10 years

Try to remeasure the size from the ground to the baby's navel. If it is less than 75cm, choose a circle size of 75cm. If you measured more than 75cm, choose the size you measured.

10-15 years

Try to remeasure the size from the ground to the baby's navel. If it is less than 85cm, choose a circle size of 85cm. If you measured more than 85cm, choose the size you measured.

15 years and above

follow the same hoop selection rules as adults
